Competing and The In-House Throwdown
Competition requires us to reach outside of our comfort zones, and believe me, there are a lot of things that those who have never competed take for granted. A different knurling on a barbell, a thicker or thinner pull-up bar than what you are used to training on, an exercise you have never attempted before, or even just being judged by a complete stranger are all things that those who compete are asked to overcome in order to do well. Mix all of those variables with a multi-wod event in which athletes must warm-up, compete at maximum output, cool down/recover and then repeating that cycle 3 or 4 more times and you can start to understand how this isn’t just another day of training.
Competing in CrossFit events is skill set in it’s own right. Those who compete are forced to tune in to their bodies and use all the tools in their CF toolboxes to prepare for and recover from multiple events in a single day — sometimes multiple events on two or three consecutive days.
CrossFit Dublin was well represented at the Titanic Games 2013 a few weeks back, Myself, Chad, Doug and Poncho all headed up to Crossfit Belfast early on Saturday morning (too early!!, we were all asleep after the 1st WOD, Poncho has that pic he might tweet it) to throwdown for a 2 day comp with some of Irelands best Crossfit athletes.
I know the 4 of us will be putting our names forward for competitions in the future weather it be here in Ireland the UK or Europe. We hope to see more CFD coaches and members doing the same. If you need help finding an event or setting goals, let the coaching staff know and we will gladly steer you in the right direction. Those who don’t work towards an event or goal will be called out. If this challenge scares you, GOOD!! That’s what it’s supposed to do! I promise you will never be more motivated to regularly complete and improve your training than when your training has a purpose weather it be crossfit or something outside of crossfit.
In the past 3 years the growth of the amount of members that have decided to go for the Crossfit games open has been amazing. In 2011 we had 8, 2012 we had 33 and this year we had 57. This is really great to see, we had a mix people who have been doing crossfit for 3+ years to people who just started this a few months ago.
In 2011 we had Michael and Tina qualified for the European regionals to go against the top 60 males and top 60 females. Lynda competed at two CrossFit regionals in Africa, 2011 & 2012, and earned a spot at the CrossFit Games in 2011.
Tina did exceptionally well again this year finishing 7th in the Canada East regionals.
The CFD team went to the londonthrowdown Feb 2012 and came with 5th place out of 30. Cri, Shiv , Doug , Conan and Maddogg in the Lodon throwdown back in February 2012
In 2012 Crossfit Dublin Qualified as a team to go against the top 30 teams in Europe. Myself my bro Michael, Doug, Shiv Cri and Sophie.
This year Doug O’Dwyer came 1st in Ireland in every workout, he finished 55th but unfortunately this year they made in top 48 males opposed to top 60 in previous years.
I would like to see an increase in CFD members taking part again next year in the CF open, whatever your ability/level it is a great few weeks to test your training, skills and weaknesses. To find out more about the Open click here
We will be holding a In-House comp the Blackrock location on Saturday the 27th of July 2013 just to get the ball rolling and give you a taste of whats to come. We have been talking to other CF boxes both here in Ireland and in Europe about getting different types of events going all of which will be all happening in the coming months and hopefully take on some of these events annually.
