Congratulations to Athletes of the Month – Donal Bolger and Claire Rogers

Meet Claire

1> Where are you from?
Surprise surprise I’m from Nordie land (there’s A LOT of us in the gym!)

2> When you’re not at Perpetua what do you do for work and for fun?
I work in finance which is a surprise to most people as my maths is really bad!! For fun – anything food related! I spend a lot of my time making food, eating food or thinking about eating food!

3> How did you find out about CrossFit?
I live quite close to the gym so would always have seen people running up and down the side of the gym or climbing the ropes inside and thought someday I want to be fit enough to try that!

4> How long have you been a member at Perpetua?
Ooh 1&1/2 years I think now!

5> Why do you do CrossFit?
I love that fact that the classes are always different and the there’s always a skill that you can improve on. Once you master one skill/technique there’s another 10 that you can be working on!

6> How often do you train?
About 6 times a week. I like to split it between cross fit classes, gymnastics and strength to mix it up! I’ve also recently started to go to open gym on Sundays which is a good opportunity to work on weaknesses

7>What are your fitness goals?
At the minute my main goal is to improve my mobility – someday I will get an overhead squat!

8> What is your greatest achievement?
I think it has to be finally getting over my phobia of box jumps!! Anyone that knows me knows how much I use to panic at the site of box jumps in a WOD. Big thanks to Kat and Conor for helping me with that one!

9> What or who motivates you?
Everyone else in the gym really. It’s great motivation when you’re surrounded by people that are continually pushing themselves and when you see them making progress it motivates me to push myself. Oh and Samantha Brigggs!

10> What is your favourite and least favourite WOD or movement?
I love deadlifts and I’m also one of those weirdo’s that actually likes burpees so don’t mind when they come up a WOD (well apart from the surprise 8mins of burpees WOD that popped up last year!) I hate the assault bike so dread when that comes up!

11> Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them starting out?
I would definitely recommend Crossfit to anyone. The great thing about Crossfit is that you can always scale a movement or WOD depending where your fitness levels are. For anyone starting out I advise them to just keep turning up! At the start I dreaded each class, I was unsure of a lot of the movements and had no clue what EMOM or AMRAP meant! But the more classes I went to the easier to movements became and the more comfortable I became! Oh and don’t be afraid to ask questions – all the coaches are more than willingly to explain a movement or WOD.

12> Favourite cheat meal?
Sausage rolls from the Ferrari chippy in Ringsend! And cream croissants after Saturday morning class are a close second!

13> Favourite thing about Perpetua?
Has to be the people! No matter what class you turn up to there’s always a friendly face!

14> Bonus question: Most memorable or funniest moment at Perpetua?
Don’t think I can mention the funniest moment on here 😉 but the most memorable one would have to be the end of the open last year- pizza and beer in the gym- what else could you ask for!

Meet Donal

1> Where are you from?

Im from a place called Tullow which is in the Sunny South-East of Ireland in County Carlow.

2> When you’re not at Perpetua what do you do for work and for fun?

So my day job is working as an IT infrastructure Engineer, I make sure the IT systems don’t go on fire! ( not a real fire btw) , and on some weekends I help my dad and brother out on their farm. Aside from that I like going to rugby matches, 5/10k runs and catching up with friends.

3> How did you find out about CrossFit?

A former co-worker got me into it, they got amazing results from the crossfit they went to and I was bored with the normal gym that I use to go and I decided to give Crossfit a try! and haven’t looked back since!

4> How long have you been a member at Perpetua?

I joined around November 2014

5> Why do you do CrossFit?

I have been a member of a few normal gyms in Dublin and have seen little to no results from it, but with Crossfit it is different, It’s constantly varied and high intensity. I like that it’s never the same, and you get to work on being a more all-round athlete

6> How often do you train?

I aim to train around 4 – 5 times a week!

Contrary to popular belief I don’t live in Perpetua!

7>What are your fitness goals?

Like most people it would be to get fitter, faster and stronger! With emphasis on getting stronger as I want to get those numbers up on my snatch, clean and jerk etc

Also one day I’d love to get a 200kg back squat!

8> What is your greatest achievement?

There has been a lot of late, Taking part in two crossfit competitions in the last four months, finally getting HSPU’s, taking part in the nutrition challenge and getting amazing results from that!

But I suppose the one stands out the most has to be:

45 Cals in 45 Seconds on the Assault Bike!

9> What or who motivates you?

Seeing people in the gym doing stuff that I can only dream about and of course the amazing coaches!

10> What is your favourite and least favourite WOD or movement?

Least favourite movement = Well I think the whole community know this already, but its fair to say I’m not a fan of burpees!

Favourite movement = Rowing, Squats, Wall Balls and Thrusters

11> Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them starting out?

Definitely would recommend it to family and friends, and the advice I would give them would be “Just keep showing up!”

12> Favourite cheat meal?

Pizza, Bunsen Burgers and Coco pops!

13> Favourite thing about Perpetua?

The people! Without the amazing people that are in the gym, Perpetua would not be the special place that it is! If it wasn’t for those same people pushing me to get better ( you know who you’s are! ) I would not have made Athlete of the Month!

14> Bonus question: Most memorable or funniest moment at Perpetua?

Most memorable = Qualifying for the Celtic Cup Competition!

Funniest moment = Emer describing how I looked doing 60 burpees with a weighted vest “Donal, it was like you were in a glass case of emotion!”
