Give a big round of applause to our September Athletes of the Month, Aoife Burke and Luke Farrell! We think that, in addition to being Athletes of the Month, these two win the prize for the most beastly first workout at CFP! Read on to find out what those WODs were…

Meet Aoife Burke

Tell us a bit about yourself…what do you do outside of CrossFit for work and for fun?
I’m a personal trainer at Gymbox . I sometimes enjoy the occasional beverage at the weekend!

How did you get involved in CrossFit?
I heard about it from your neighbours at LOWA

When did you first join CFP?
I joined in May this year

What was your first WOD in the classes?
I think it was thrusters & burpees 21-18-15-12-9

When did you realise CrossFit was right for you?
Right after that WOD!

What are your short term and long term goals?
Short term: Get 10 strict pull ups… Currently on 3! Long term maybe compete in some type of CrossFit competition.

Olympic lifts and squats

What is your least favourite WOD / movement?
Pull ups!!!

Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them?

Meet Luke Farrell

Tell us a bit about yourself…what do you do outside of CrossFit for work and for fun?
I work as a chartered surveyor. Fun usually comes in the form of socialising with mates and a few beers…and a few more

How did you get involved in CrossFit?
My brother, Ben, was into it in Glasgow and I had always wanted to give it a try in London but there wasn’t a box close enough. When CFP opened I found it online and came down to a basics session and then got involved in the classes.

For me, the CrossFit environment and CFP in particular is the closest I have come to a team sports type environment.

When did you first join CFP?
June 2013

What was your first WOD in the classes?
The first and one of the most difficult I can remember was a Regionals WOD we did:

50 Back Squat (60kg), 40 pull ups, 30 STOH (60kg)

 50 Front squat (50kg), 40 pull ups, 30 STOH (50)

50 OH squats (30kg), 40 pull ups, 30 STOH

There was a 25 min time cap and I made it to the 3rd lot of pull ups. Would like to try it again

When did you realise CrossFit was right for you?

Pretty quickly. I enjoyed the competitiveness, both with myself and amongst the other members and the general banter that was flying around. I have made some good mates as well and it was apparent quite quickly that people at the box were generally of a similar mindset

What are your short term and long term goals?

Short term: regain strength and weight (so I can start trouncing Popey without even trying again).
Long Term: continue to enjoy CrossFit

What is your greatest accomplishment?
Putting up with Ren’s very strange behaviour in class on a daily basis for over a year.

What is your favourite WOD / movement?
Anything bodyweight

What is your least favourite WOD / movement?
Wall Balls/touch and go cleans/deadlift

Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them?
Yes I have and do. Proper results will only come if you commit at least 4 days a week to CrossFit over a sustained period.

Funniest thing that you’ve seen at CrossFit?
Watching Popey get stuck (often) at the bottom of a clean and seeing Osman trying to do double unders.
