Meet Briony Garbett

1> What do you do outside of CrossFit for work and for fun?

Outside of CrossFit I am the ‘Head of Ecommerce & Customer Experience’ at Oasis Fashions (not the band, or the drink, or the dating site!) I’m basically responsible for growing the sales and profitability of the online business both in the UK and internationally and ensuring our customers are receiving the best service and experience across all retail channels. Fun times. Right now, the hours are fairly long and I’m in IT workshops for days on end; I expend 90% of my energy in these resisting the urge to eat the chocolate digestives! However, I’m fortunate enough to have an amazing team who are incredibly supportive and great fun to be around so 80% of the time I love it all the time!

Without this sounding too much like a dating profile…in my spare time I enjoy long runs in the countryside and eating peanut butter by the jar.

2> How did you get involved in CrossFit?

Hmmmm. Let’s just say I was ‘fortunate’ enough to be dating a CrossFitter a while back and he encouraged me to come down to CFSL and get involved. Whilst that didn’t exactly work out, I gained an amazing group of mates and a rather addictive ‘hobby’ and haven’t looked back since…silver linings!

3> When did you first join CFP?

August 2013; I remember Pricey taking an ‘Intro to Crossfit’ session one Saturday morning. I was so nervous! A group of four of us from that session (the ones who weren’t put off by what now would be considered a ‘warm-up’!) did the fundamentals course and joined in the August. I’m the only one crazy enough to still be here a year and a half later!

4> What was your first WOD in the classes?

Funnily enough the memory has been somewhat repressed. Literally all I remember from the first WOD was that it involved rowing. Lots of rowing. And Ren. Lots of Ren. Ren was screaming her characteristic, somewhat abusive style of ‘encouragement’ at me on the rower despite never previously acknowledging my existence. Philly was coaching and noticing the look of sheer terror on my face, took it upon himself to email me apologising for her enthusiasm:

“Hey Bri, I meant to email earlier but I hope you werent put off with Ren shouting in your ear the other day. Sometimes other members get carried away and think that other members need to urged on like they do, sometimes it works, other times no. Sorry about that – hope you didnt think it was TOO crazy.”

He didn’t realise that that moment was actually exactly when I realised CrossFit was right for me.

5> When did you realise CrossFit was right for you?

I first walked into the box in the height of summer to an army of scantily clad, muscle bound men…need I say any more!?

Just kidding, kind of.

To be honest, it’s moments like the above example and the Open where the community comes together and you feel a part of something – that’s when I love CrossFit the most. When you’ve got the community (aka your mates), cheering you on and you achieve things that you know you wouldn’t be able to on your own, that feeling of pride when you get a new personal best and you see how proud you’ve made your coaches and how pleased your mates are for you – for me, that’s what’s priceless about CrossFit and specifically, CrossFit Perpetua. Whether you’re the athlete or the supporter, I love being a part of that.

6> What are your short term goals?

I’d like to…
– be able to string more than 3 HSPUs together and not look like a dying frog
– get some chest-to-bar pull-ups…but I think I may need some cosmetic enhancements for that to become achievable!
– get to a point where I’m able to RX the weights on workouts – I’m nearly there but 50kg hang power cleans just isn’t happening quite yet!

7> Long term goals?

One day I will be able to do a muscle up. One day. Hopefully before pigs start to fly.

8> What is your greatest accomplishment?

Big question! In Crossfit or life!? In Crossfit it was probably managing to clean and jerk 55kg in 15.1 which isn’t anywhere near a lot of the other RX girls but it is just over my bodyweight so I felt like it was a great accomplishment…especially as I had failed the first three attempts! In life, I like to think it hasn’t happened yet!

9> What is your favourite WOD / movement?

I love a good jerk.

10> What is your least favourite WOD / movement?

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I detest wall balls as they highlight my complete lack of coordination. Snatch is also up there on my ‘avoid’ list as I have yet to perfect the technique (or come anywhere close!)

The worst WOD I’ve ever done was in the 2014 open; those thrusters and bar-facing burpees were almost the end of me. Genuinely. Never am I ever doing that again. My quads are literally recoiling at the thought!

11> Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them?

Absolutely, although I think most of my non-CrossFit friends are put off by the constant chat of snatching, jerking and ripped hands. I think it takes a certain sort of person to be a ‘CrossFitter’…you’ve got to be a little bit crazy!

12> Least favourite and favourite music to WOD to?

Rusty’s period mix is sometimes questionable! Consulting my globogym playlist it would appear to be the case that I love a bit of Sigma, Pendulum and some I See Monstas…let’s get that on the open playlist pronto!!

13> Bonus question: Most memorable or funniest CFP moment?

There are far too many to list but spiking Popey’s water with stale coffee and watching as he wrestled with Monk, the innocent ‘culprit’ was a classic moment. In fact, seeing Popey in his early handstand days was always tremendous; was he going to collapse into it or rescue himself, who knew!? Ren has also provided some priceless moments with Lady Camille Toe and her infamous onesies though most of Ren’s moment’s are not appropriate to share within the community! There are genuinely, so many hilarious moments at CFP – I feel super fortunate to be able to hang out with a group of like-minded, fun ‘athletes’ and coaches who train hard but also have the humility to laugh at themselves and have a bit of banter! My weeks just wouldn’t be the same without you guys… 🙂

Meet Adam Giles

1> What do you do outside of CrossFit for work and for fun?

I work for Samsung Mobile UK, play ice hockey, Skate/Snowboard, drink beer and watch sport.

2> How did you get involved in CrossFit?

I heard about Crossfit a few years ago from a buddy and he showed me a few things but there was no box in my area, I then moved to Battersea and I knew a collegue from work used to train at Perpetua (Emma G who is married to Philly for those that know that dynamic duo). I asked where the box was, Philly put me in touch with Ozzy and the rest is history as they say.

3> When did you first join CFP?

1st class was 1st October last year.

4> What was your first WOD in the classes?

Errrr, one other thing to know about me is that I have a shocking memory….I should probably have it written down I know!

5> When did you realise CrossFit was right for you?

1st fundamentals session with Ozzie, knew I was hooked from day 1!!

6> What are your short term goals?

Improve mobility and get stronger, there are still some tekkers I need to work on but I won’t list them all. 🙂

7> Long term goals?

I am pretty competitive so would be cool to one day get to that level but really I just wan to improve everytime I walk into the box and stay physically fit.

8> What is your greatest accomplishment?

Perhaps a bit green to Crossfit to have any……(yet!), though I think completing the open this year will be the 1st! Oh and getting a muscle up, was ugly but I got it.

9> What is your favourite WOD / movement?

Back squat or power clean, enjoy to grip and rip!

10> What is your least favourite WOD / movement?

Wall balls or thrusters, they destroy me!

11> Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them?

Yeah, typically like many (all) CrossFitters I can’t help myself but tell people about CrossFit and our box.

12> Least favourite and favourite music to WOD to?

Ah loads, I like my music. Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Down tempo, Rock, Metal, D&B & EDM to name a few!

13> Bonus question: Most memorable or funniest CFP moment?

I probably have 2 for this:
1. I was made redundant in November last year and for the 2 months I had off CF kept me focused, driven and motivated. Also everyone at the box was really supportive!
2. I was doing a WOD with the big dog Pricey and as I have done a few times in my short CF carreer I put too much weight on the bar…..since then Pricey has called me Terry, as in “Terry too much!” At the end of the WOD he says; “I have seen some Terry’s in my time bro and you are deffinately a Terry!”…. I am still not sure he knows my name.
