MEET PHILIP CROWLEY

1> What do you do outside of CrossFit for work and for fun?

I am a GP and head up quality in the HSE! For fun I try to go out as often as possible and utilise my crossfit skills on the dance floor.

2> How did you get involved in CrossFit?

I had been going to another Gym and my sister in Law and Brother recommended crossfit – so I always do what they tell me to.

3> When did you first join CFD?

January 2013 but then I blew my knee playing football and lost a year and restarted in January 2014.

4> What was your first WOD in the classes?

That suggests my memory is way better than it is – I have not recorded them all, only the ones I beat my brother in.

5> When did you realise CrossFit was right for you?

Immediately – proper fundamentals training with Dave. First class and people actually introduced themselves to me in the changing room (portakabin)

6> What are your short term goals?

To get to the physical state where I will save on sweating up my shirt by taking it off for the WOD. Not physically/sculpturally ready for that – could be a while.

7> Long term goals?

To stay strong and mentally fit – I find crossfit really keeps me in good mental shape (my opinion I grant you). And also to realise my short term goal which will take a long time.

8> What is your greatest accomplishment?

5 recent hand stand push ups (with 2 cushions I admit). Our team was one place outside qualifying for recent competition final (mainly thanks to Olivia and Gerald)

9> What is your favourite WOD / movement?

Filthy Fifites was intense

10> What is your least favourite WOD / movement?

Double unders – the rope really whips my ass when it catches on my foot.

11> Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them?

Definitely. Don’t go anywhere else. And only go to the Perpetua gyms! – New branding. Best coaching and best crowd. Don’t be embarrassed about lifting the bar on its own while others are lifting twice their body weight, no one cares.

12> Least favourite and favourite music to WOD to?

Least favourite – anything that is not sufficiently angry. Favourite – Turn down for white by DJ Snake and Lil John

13> Bonus question: Most memorable or funniest CFD moment?

Having an amorous but unplanned encounter with Albert’s dog during the competition. I think that is why we were pipped in the competition – I couldn’t concentrate after it. He is twice my size (the dog that is).

MEET MARTIN WALLACE

1> What do you do outside of CrossFit for work and for fun?

I work as a disruptive technology seeker for an advanced manufacturing technology group in GSK R&D. I travel the world looking for advances in science and tech to help transform how we make medicines.  I road cycle and I am a voracious reader which is important when you travel a lot.

2> How did you get involved in CrossFit?

I was recommended to speak to CFD by one of my cycling friends as I was training to race in the Etape de Tour in France (one of the mountain stages in the Tour de France) and needed to build my leg and back strength.

3> When did you first join CFD?

2 years off and on. Due to work changes I had to stop for a while and now I am determined to make a consistent level of progress and focus on nailing the movements!

4> What was your first WOD in the classes?

Fran I think – I thought I was going to die afterwards!

5> When did you realise CrossFit was right for you?

During the fundamentals. Crossfit offered such variety and fed my appetite to learn more while at the same time pushing myself hard.

6> What are your short term goals?

Maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle and master DU

7> Long term goals?

I would like to complete the Etape de Tour in 2015 with my wife. Still working on that.

8> What is your greatest accomplishment?

Tough one but from a sporting perspective – I almost completed the Etape de Tour – collapsed 6 turns from the finish of the Alpe de Huez after suffering from food poisoning the three days before the race. I had a bowl of Flahavans 4 am that morning and everyone told me that I should not go but I live by a saying from my dad which I often use to drive me on during wods:         “persistence beats resistance”! I never felt as good and as bad in any situation. Crossing over the Col de Galibier is a memory I will never forget.

9> What is your favourite WOD / movement?

I actually love any wod with rowing in it. Sounds mad but I used to row and loved to race!

10> What is your least favourite WOD / movement?

Split jerk – I think the lack of coordination shines through here!

11> Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them?

Yes- I have driven them demented. My younger sister is planning on joining her local Crossfit so I think my persistence is starting to work. I brought my colleague to Crossfit while in Boston. He is now a Crossfit member too!  Stick with it. At the start it is tough and frustrating and it is something that most of us has experienced but it is great when you have the confidence to push yourself hard during the wod.

12> Least favourite and favourite music to WOD to?

Least – Beyoncé – “single ladies”- my wife infected my iTunes

Favourite – Sail -Awolnation

13> Bonus question: Most memorable or funniest CFD moment?

So many- I love being able to surprise myself when finishing a wod when other people are pushing me.

Thanks to all the CFD team/ members and keep up the good work.
