Congratulations to Perpetua's Athlete of the Month – Niamh Balmforth
Congratulations to Perpetua’s Athlete of the Month – Niamh Balmforth.
Niamh was chosen by the coaches has she has been making huge progress in her time at Perpetua. Niamh finished top 10 in this year’s Perpetua Open scaled division as well as winning our January Eat Clean Be Lean Challenge with outstanding results. She had the highest score overall, which was reflected by her incredible result of 5% body fat loss over the course of the programme.
“Niamh has really taken CrossFit head on since she started last summer. Herself & her husband Brian have been great to work with. Niamh started at lunch time but changed to mornings when her work schedule changed and never misses a session, showing that when you want something you’ll find a way. She has done that in getting her first pull up recently after a lot of hard work and sticking with the progressions. Keep it up Niamh & I look forward to seeing your progress continue!” – A message from Niamh’s Coach – Conor
1. Where are you from?
I grew up in Cork. But I’ve been in Dublin quite a while now…after a few years in Scotland and Australia.
2. When you’re not at Perpetua what do you do for work and for fun?
I work as an actuary. Outside of work, I have two young kids who keep me very busy – so any spare time involves keeping them entertained!
3. How did you find out about CrossFit?
As I work very nearby, I had often passed by and I was a bit intrigued. So when I decided I needed to get in shape I did a bit more research to see what was going on in there!
4. How long have you been a member at Perpetua?
I started my fundamentals with Conor about 9 months ago now.
5. Why do you do CrossFit?
Initially it was to just get fit and lose weight..and I saw it as an alternative to a traditional gym (which I’ve always hated) But I couldn’t imagine not going now – I love being able to see progress in terms of lifting weights, and managing to do new movements. It’s quite addictive.
6. How often do you train?
I aim for 4 times a week.
7. What are your fitness goals?
I’d like to get better at the gymnastic type movements – kipping swings, toes to bar etc. I think mobility wise, the years behind a desk will take a while to undo though…
Also I find overhead squats really hard – so I’d like to see some improvement on them.
8. What is your greatest achievement?
I just got a strict pull up very recently – so I’m delighted with that.
I was also very happy with my results from the Eat Clean be Lean program – which I would highly recommend to everyone!
9. What or who motivates you?
In CrossFit it’s the constant challenges that keep me going. Once you get one movement, it’s on to the next!
Also, carbs. I love my toast after a good workout! 🙂
10. What is your favourite and least favourite WOD or movement?
Favourite: Deadlifts and kettlebell swings
Least favourite: Burpees and Wall balls would fight it out for that award…which reminds me that “Karen” has to be my least favourite WOD so far…(150 wall balls for time..)
11. Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them starting out?
I do recommend it to be people all the time! I even convinced my husband to join with me.
I would advise people not to be intimidated. It looks a bit scary coming in….but everyone in Perpetua is really friendly, and people tend to be so focussed on their own pain in workouts that no-one has time to worry about what others are doing! Oh and the first few weeks/months will hurt!
12. Favourite cheat meal?
Indian take away, preferably with wine. If you’re going to cheat, might as well do it properly!
13. Favourite thing about Perpetua?
The constant challenges and the motivation in classes. The coaches are great – they are all so approachable, and very helpful. I like the format of working out in a group – there have been a few times people have cheered me on to finish a workout – it’s a great support and I don’t expect you’d find that sort of encouragement in many other gyms. I really enjoyed the Open this year, especially the final night. It was nice to have a beer while watching all the finalists sweat it out! The 12 WODs of Christmas was great fun too.
Well done Niamh – keep it up!
