Meet Laura

1> Where are you from?
I am from Surrey, pretty close to the border of Sussex and Kent. Basically where it’s all green and you can hear birds and wildlife everywhere. It’s pretty awesome.

2> When you’re not at Perpetua what do you do for work and for fun?
I am a dental hygienist and work in a beautiful practice in Richmond by the river. Did you know Perpetua members get 20% off all treatments with me?! (Shameless plug – hehe – check out ‘The Gill Clinic’.) There are a few of us hygienists at Perpetua so the job must attract the competitive/crazy type. For fun it’s anything outdoors, playing cricket, walking some doggies and eating lots and lots of yummy non paleo food!!! Oh and hanstanding… anywhere, anytime, anyplace.

3> How did you find out about CrossFit?
I used to do a crazy kettlebell class up in Manchester at uni and my instructor realised how crazy competitive and into fitness I was and said CrossFit was something I really ought to check out because I would love it. So one day when I was in London I noticed a Range rover with CrossFit on it. I decided to then stalk Pricey from his car into a Butchers in Battersea… I waited till he had bought his food before pouncing on him with multiple questions.

4> How long have you been a member at Perpetua?
Hmm.. does it have to include the time away from training? You know from the broken arm courtesy of box jumps, or the broken fingers from cricket?

Collectively I believe it’s been a little over a year and a half.

5> Why do you do CrossFit?
For my mind as well as my body. It keeps me sane (some may disagree) by releasing any stress I have. I love the endorphins and the challenges. I also cherish the friendships I have made.

6> How often do you train?
5-7 times a week. I should rest more.

7>What are your fitness goals?
To challenge myself daily and get better at everything. Mainly I would love to be able to do a muscle up one day, and then do some of the crazy shit Mike Lee does. Basically be a gymnastic ninja.

8> What is your greatest achievement?
This one is hard. I don’t think I have got there yet. But maybe finding such amazing friends and people to have around me.

9> What or who motivates you?
My Grannie and my mum! My Grannie because she is such a badass/scary/inspirational lady. One of the first women doctors to become a consultant/head of department in England. Amazing. And my mum for sporting reasons; playing lacrosse for England and just generally being so competitive she gives me a run for my money.

10> What is your favourite and least favourite WOD or movement?
I love doing gymnastics stuff. I really enjoy pull ups and olympic lifting. Basically everything is awesome bar wall balls… Who the heck even likes them?!

11>Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them starting out?
Yes but not my brother. We are far too competitive and we would spend the whole WOD bickering about who is stronger. I would obviously win, but then my brother would be sad. I don’t want to make my brother sad.

12>Favourite cheat meal?
Real wood oven fired Italian napoletena pizza with fresh chillies. The best place is ‘Pizzeria Pellone’ in Herne Hill. It’s so cheap too!!

13> Favourite thing about Perpetua?
The people 🙂

14>Bonus question: Most memorable or funniest moment at Perpetua?
Breaking my arm on a box jump in Ozzie’s class. Poor guy was in a state of shock. Luckily manned up and got over my fear of boxes pretty quickly. Although if a WOD comes up in the open with them it may make my legs weak.

Meet Rob

1> Where are you from?
London Clapham Common.

2> When you’re not at Perpetua what do you do for work and for fun?
I run a small dental lab in central London. When not at work we love to waterski and snowboard – also commuting I like to cycle.

3> How did you find out about CrossFit?
Other water skiers had started using CrossFit as a winter time activity.

4> How long have you been a member at Perpetua?
Just over a year.

5> Why do you do CrossFit?
I was in a mess could not run or jump with out pain in my legs.

6> How often do you train?
Presently 3 to 5 times a week.

7>What are your fitness goals?
Overall I just want to maintain myself so that I can carry on enjoying all sports, however I am beginning to enjoy CrossFit in its own right.

8> What is your greatest achievement?
When I went through the ten original lessons with Mario (great coach!). He showed me the wall ball and I managed about five, hit myself on the head, dropped the ball and probably fell over. Then Mario asked me to do 75 as the workout. I thought he was taking the piss – had he not seen what just happened when I did 5?!

9> What or who motivates you?
Generally all the coaches and members are great motivators and also my son Joel who also trains most evenings.

10> What is your favourite and least favourite WOD or movement?
That’s a long list as I can’t do a lot of the movements however I think you should attack your worst with everything you’ve got – so never look at workouts before coming to the gym!

11>Would you recommend CrossFit to your friends and family? What advice would you give them starting out?
Don’t delay – there’s nothing to lose.

12>Favourite cheat meal?
Sunday roast.

13> Favourite thing about Perpetua?
The coaches and members are what makes the gym, passing on their craft and the motivation makes the place.

14>Bonus question: Most memorable or funniest moment at Perpetua?
Seeing Charlotte fall off a box trying an inverted push-up and rolling around in the middle of a WOD like a turtle on her back !!
