1. How were you introduced to Crossfit?

In early 2013, I was closing in on 17st and had decided that I needed to do something beyond the occasional game of 5-a-side with my friends to get in shape. I had walked by the city centre gym a few times and eventually decided to look it up online having no idea what Crossfit was anything more the name of the gym. I had literally never held a barbell before signing up and it took me a few weeks to get over my apprehension and actually commit to the fundamentals sessions last October.

2. Favorite WOD/lift:

Any of the overhead lifts

3. I have always wanted to…

do a road trip across the US

4. One word people use to describe me:

Sarcastic

5. Outside of the gym I like to…

Hang out with friends, play poker and  I like going to matches/gigs

6. Something nobody knows about me or would be surprised to know about me:

I used to work in a job where I had to analyse game play looking for cheaters in online poker games.

7. Favorite physical activity outside of Crossfit:

I’ve recently started cycling the 14km trip to work and I’ve been enjoying so far. Still haven’t done a Crossfit session and cycled to work on the same morning but it’s going to happen soon.

I also enjoy a good game of 5-a-sde with my friends especially when the games become way more competitive than a kick around should be.

8. Favorite place to eat in Dublin:

I like The Counter, their menu makes it really easy to stick to Paleo and it’s never too difficult to convince people to go to a burger place

9. Song that gets me pumped up for a workout:

Anything at all, as long as there’s something playing in the background I don’t mind, most of the time I wouldn’t have a clue what songs were playing during a WOD

10. Proudest accomplishment:

In Crossfit terms, I got four PRs in four days a few weeks ago which I was pretty happy about. It’s nice to see progression but it’s easy to be getting PRs when starting from such a low level. I’ll be proud when I’m RXing WODs regularly

Outside of Crossfit it has to be getting my masters in 2012. It was a really tough year, I was in college Monday to Friday and had to work night shifts from Thursday to Sunday. This meant I was often staying awake for 36+ hours and had to regularly get by on hour or two of sleep here and there. I don’t think anyone has fallen asleep on the Luas and missed their stop as much as I have! It all worked out in the end as I got asked to apply for job following a drunken conversation about the masters with my then future boss.

11. Main two things that have most improved since joining CFD?

Routine
Having worked nights and evenings for over 3 years up to last July, including the year doing my masters, my sleeping pattern was a total mess. Even after moving to a job with regular hours I would still be awake half the night and be getting just 3 or 4 hours sleep a night. Ever since I started Crossfit I have been going to the earliest class each morning and it’s gotten me into a routine where I actually have to go bed at a reasonable time.

Diet
This has been huge for me, I’ve lost 22lbs since January, mainly with the paleo challenge. I still have a good distance to go but I had often talked about trying to get my diet in order and this is the first time I’ve actually followed through for longer than a week. It’s still far from perfect and there have been a couple a bad weeks but it’s changed my outlook for the better and even if I do have a bad week I know what I should be doing and that I can do it.
