The Perpetua Open So Far

 In Blog, Dublin

We are just past the halfway point in the CrossFit Open / Perpetua Open. With a little break over St. Patrick’s weekend it gives us time to prep for 17.4 and let the competition build over an extra week. This year saw the introduction of our team competition and it has been absolutely fantastic in helping to create an even better atmosphere within the Open. At the halfway point it is pretty ironic that our team of sandbaggers are actually top of the leaderboard! While there is a bit of a points difference building between first and fourth it is all still to play for as there are valuable points to be grabbed by turning up & representin’ for the last two workouts. King Eugene is gloriously smiling at the top of his perch for now!

The individual leaderboards are more crowded than ever before. The points differences are minimal with it all to play for, but what is most rewarding for us is seeing the amount of names on the leaderboard and everyone’s willingness to turn up on Saturday mornings!

Women’s Scaled & RX

The women’s scaled competition has been exciting this year. There is a tie for first and a tie for third with only one point separating the four athletes, but it is not just the numbers that make it an exciting competition. 17.2 introduced pull ups to the scaled competition and we saw many females hit their first pull up and more! Sofie put in a solid performance as she knocked out 11 strict pull ups on the workout, which is a testament to all those 6am starts throughout the year! Inspiration for everyone to hit their first pull ups before the 2018 Open.

In the Women’s RX, Lorraine took it to another level again with hitting her first bar muscle up, as determined as ever there was no chance she was leaving the gym without one! The four athletes (Lorraine, Lynn, Laura & Amber) in the women’s RX have smashed their way through some high skilled movements and heavier weight in the snatch. Look out at the top of the Women’s scaled as Emer & Olivia sit just above Anna and Sheila.

Men’s Scaled & RX

To say it’s heating up at the top may be an understatement 😉 There has been a big increase in competitiveness in the RX and scaled categories this year. Donal jumped to the top of the men’s RX in week 1 but has since been accompanied by John and now Daragh (aka Poncho) as the two veterans sit at the top, followed by baby faced John in third. They won’t have it all their own way as Old Champ Bernie Broderick jumped off the surgery table to hit 3 snatches @ 185lbs and gave everyone a gentle reminder of why he is the original champ.

Dan O’Toole has taken 2 wins in the Men’s scaled but it’s the big man from Galway (up Galway) Michael Monahan who’s making all the noise as usual! Michael is sitting in first place but followed closely by Stephen Gamble, Italian Stallion Antony & Shane Curran as the four fight it out for the top spot.

Watching people PR the snatch/overhead squat, get their first pull up and supporting their team mates builds the atmosphere for the Open. I can’t wait to see people smash it through 17.4 and then join us for 17.5, in what is going to be the most exciting atmosphere of all.

Two weeks to go! Keep it up!
