Now back to the food…
When I was at university a long, long, LONG time ago, there was this amazing burger place called Mr. Bartley’s – a kinda shady looking, hole-in-the-wall restaurant that always had an epic queue of students wrapping around the block, eager to get their hands on Mr. Bartley’s crazy burgers, with their matching crazy names. For example:
The Viagra (rise to the occasion!) with blue cheese dressing, bacon, lettuce, tomato
The Beyoncé (Deliciously Hot) cajun bacon, grilled onion, jalapeño and hot sauce
The Skip Gates (The Black Sheep of the family) with teriyaki sauce, grilled pineapple and onion rings
So, as a sort of nostalgic homage to Mr. Bartley’s, where I spent many a Friday night, I give you the AB & J Burger. That’s Almond Butter & Jam. Strawberry jam, to be exact. A bit wary of this combo? Trust me, it’s actually incredibly delicious.
This recipe is borrowed from the Foodee Project (http://www.thefoodee.com/), another great source of clean eating recipes. Credit also goes to the Mister for introducing me to the unexpected awesomeness that is created when you marry strawberries, almond butter and burger.

AB & J Burger
What you’ll need…
1 cup sliced strawberries
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon powdered ginger
4 burgers (You can either make these yourself using 8 oz of ground beef and salt & pepper to taste or Whole Foods does an amazing beef burger)
4 tablespoons almond butter
Green onions to garnish (optional, I don’t use!)
Now get started…
- In a small saucepan, mix the strawberries, lemon juice and ginger and set aside
- Either make your hamburgers or take your pre-made hamburgers and grill until done to your liking
- Whilst the burgers are cooking, heat the small saucepan with the strawberries on a medium heat until the strawberries start to go soft and syrupy and reduce to about 1/4 cup sauce. Set aside to cool.
- When the burgers are done, top each with a tablespoon of almond butter and 1-2 tablespoons of the strawberry jam.
Easy! Now tuck in!
